Dr. Henry William Roukema, a beloved husband, father, and respected physician, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2026, surrounded by his life partner, Janet, and loved ones. He was 67 years old. Henry leaves behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and professionalism that touched the lives of countless families and colleagues throughout his long career.
Born and raised in a loving family, Henry’s family meant the world to him. He is deeply mourned by his wife Janet, his best friend and constant companion through both life’s joys and challenges. Together, they shared many treasured memories. Henry is also survived by his three adult children, Leah, Mark, and Paul, who were the lights of his life. His mother, Didy, along with his siblings—Ruby Askes, Heather Roukema-Gritter (Roy), Trish Turkstra (Andrew), Ray (Eppie), and Cliff (Esther)—will miss him dearly. In addition, Henry’s extended family, including his in-laws Jane Suk, Deb and John Douma, Karen Suk-Patrick and Duncan Patrick, and John Suk, are left to carry on his memory. He was predeceased by his father, Job Roukema, sister Nienke (Len Batterink), father-in-law William Suk, and several siblings-in-law, including Art Suk and Henry Askes. His family, as well as his many nephews, nieces, friends, and colleagues, will forever cherish his memory.
Henry was a gifted and highly respected physician, dedicating over 30 years to the practice of neonatology medicine. His work at St. Joseph’s Hospital and London Health Sciences Centre left a profound impact on families in need of compassionate care for their newborns. Henry’s gentle demeanor, skillful hands, and vast knowledge made him a trusted figure in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). His expertise was not only recognized by families but also by the many colleagues, residents, and students he mentored throughout his career. As Director of Nurseries, he shaped the next generation of medical professionals, always providing guidance, wisdom, and encouragement.
Although Henry’s professional accomplishments were remarkable, he was a family man first and foremost. His dedication to his work never overshadowed his commitment to his family. He ensured that, no matter how demanding his schedule, he was home for dinner with Janet and the kids, even if it meant late nights at the hospital. Away from his medical practice, Henry found joy in the simple things—puttering around his house and garden, cooking for family and friends, enjoying a round of golf, and traveling with Janet and their loved ones. His love for life and for those around him was evident in all that he did.
At his core, Henry was a nurturer. He nurtured his family, his tiny patients in the NICU, his trainees, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His compassion extended far beyond his professional duties, making him not only an extraordinary physician but also a deeply cherished friend, mentor, and father figure to many.
In honor of Henry’s life, his family invites all those who knew him to an informal gathering on Sunday, February 8th, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Sunningdale Golf Club, 465 Sunningdale Road W, London. This gathering provides an opportunity for friends, family, and colleagues to come together, share memories, and offer condolences.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Ronald McDonald House Southwestern Ontario, an organization close to Henry’s heart that provides support to families with sick children. Alternatively, donations to other charities of choice are also appreciated.
Dr. Henry Roukema’s life was a testament to compassion, expertise, and love. He will be dearly missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of his family, patients, and all those fortunate enough to have known him.
